Curitiba: “Living Lightly on the Earth”

“Curitiba is referred to as the ecological capital of Brazil, with a network of 28 parks and wooded areas” which makes up one fifth of the city (Curitiba, Brazil 1). “In 1970, there was less than one square meter of green space per person; now there are 52 square meters per person” (Curitiba, Brazil 1). Volunteers have planted 1.5 million trees along the city streets, and recreational bike paths occupy 200 kilometers of land.
